R&C

We discussed 21st Century Slavery with a group of sixth formers at St Anne's Catholic High School

How would it feel to be trapped? To be removed from the comforts of your home, your family, your friends and forced to work in a situation where all your freedom has been taken from you?

Scroll down and use the slider tool to see how St Anne’s responded, and to view relevant statistics and quotes they wanted to share. The images on the left show how the students felt, while the images on the right provide more information on each issue.

Stolen Childhood

Many young people are trafficked into the UK from abroad. They can also be trafficked from one part of the UK to another. Traffickers may promise young people education, work, or persuade parents that their children have a better future in another place. In actuality, they can face sexual abuse, forced labour and a life of crime. If you need more information about this you can click here to get help.

Vulnerable Girls Targeted

Fact from The National Crime Agency.

Girls, especially those estranged from their family or dependent on drugs, are targeted by traffickers. Over 1600 females were trafficked in the UK in 2013.

People Not Products

Fact from United Nations on Drugs and Crime.

Human trafficking generates massive global profits every year. One woman can earn a trafficker between £500 and £1,000 a week. That’s up to £52,000 per year for each victim. If you need more information or support click here.

The Slave Next Door

According to human rights organisation Hagar forced labour and domestic servitude accounts for 36% of trafficked victims globally. We could be living next door to someone who is being trafficked. You can report crime anonymously to Crimestoppers here.

For more information about this you can click here. Find out how you can further support this growing problem.

What Did Your Last Slave Die Of?

23 Chinese migrant workers drowned during high tides picking cockles at Morecambe Bay, Lancashire. They had been smuggled into Britain illegally with the promise of a better way of life, but were treated violently and had their passports destroyed. “If there’s any fitting memorial to the poor people that died it would be to ensure no one else suffers the same fate.” – Jim Sheridan, Labour MP

Stolen Dignity

We found the above quote from Nelson Mandela in the New York Times. Human trafficking, often referred to as ‘modern day slavery’, is a violation of the victims’ human rights. If you want to find out more, you can click here and help end exploitation and trafficking.

Hope

Hope For Justice is a charity taking practical action to end the horror of 21st century slavery. They rescue victims and help rebuild their lives.
